For an older demographic used to classified ads, blind dates and singles bars, the cyber dating world can feel like an alternate universe. Yet, those plus are increasingly joining the scene. That figure is 1 in 10 for those 65 and older. And the overall number of to year-olds who have dabbled in dating sites or mobile dating apps doubled to 12 percent in from 6 percent in , according to the Pew Research Center.

Older online dating customers are in danger of being scammed out of money by fake sweethearts, and AARP is calling for dating websites to do more about it. AARP is asking dating sites to use algorithms to detect suspicious language patterns used by scammers, search for fake profiles and educate members on how to avoid romance scammers.
Maybe most significant, it is asking dating sites to be more proactive, issuing alerts to members who have been in contact with someone using a fraudulent profile. Neither company returned a request for comment Monday. And while some sites offer safety tips, they could make the advice more prominent or even require users to read them before joining, he said.
Most dating websites used to focus on helping singles get acquainted with extended online communication before meeting face-to-face. But now the order is reversed: a growing number of sites are geared to helping users plan offline activities to size each other up and decide if they’ve got chemistry. And everybody’s getting into the act — even the AARP. So the organization is launching its own dating enterprise, in partnership with an up-and-coming site called HowAboutWe. Nicholas, a sales consultant in Los Angeles, was married for 12 years; he says it was difficult to get back into dating after his divorce was finalized in August.
